CarSense is designed for open hardware — it works with generic ELM327 Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) adapters, not a proprietary dongle. If you already own an OBD2 Bluetooth scanner, there's a good chance CarSense works with it and you can start scanning for free.
Why it works with CarSense
- No proprietary hardware — unlike CarMD, FIXD, BlueDriver, or Carly, CarSense doesn't lock you to a $60–$120 branded dongle.
- Best results with a Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE / Bluetooth 4.0+) ELM327 adapter — required for iPhone.
- If you don't own one yet, the Veepeak OBDCheck BLE+ (~$40) is the one we recommend and test against.
How to set it up
- Make sure your adapter is a Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) ELM327 — not Wi-Fi or classic Bluetooth (those don't work on iPhone).
- Plug it into your car's OBD2 port and turn the ignition ON.
- Open CarSense and tap Connect.
- If it connects, you're set — scan your codes free.
